Tywrone Waigana is a Wandandi Noongar (Aboriginal) and Ait Koedhal (Torres Strait Islander) cross disciplinary artist who is navigating his multiple plains of existence as a youth, as a man, as an artist, as a dreamer, as a truth teller… graphic designer. His practice includes painting, illustration, sculpture, animation and graphic design. In case you didn’t know, Wadandi are saltwater people that live within the ‘Cape to Cape’ ‘Warren Blackwood’ region. They have maintained an intricate system and way of life living by the six seasonal rotation and have done so for over 50,000 years. Ty draws on his rich cultural heritage where mythology intersects the places where we all visit, live and holiday on.
Tywrone feels that growing up in an urban based setting in the Australian middle – lower class suburbs he observed that people don't actually interact with Aboriginal people very much. The complete invisibility of Indigenous narratives in main stream channels further mystifies the everyday. Tywrone navigates these ubiquitous colloquial territories as an artist, as a man, as a youth- post high school. These ideas are more overt in “The rest of your life is going to be shit” where Ty signature tongue in cheek taboo investigations make fun of the very serious idea that high school is somehow formative to the rest of your life.
